Schools Waking Up to Teens' Unique Sleep Needs

Schools Waking Up to Teens' Unique Sleep Needs: "So although it's not impossible for adolescents to go to sleep before 11 p.m., or even to be alert in the morning, Carskadon said, their bodies make it hard, and in some cases nearly impossible, to do."

There's a quote in the article talking about how it's not coddling the kids, but it IS. The real world doesn't work that way, and despite workers crying out for years for more flexible work schedules, it's just not happening. We do not hold our kids accountable. If they're not getting enough sleep, it's because ... they're not getting enough sleep. Procrastinating, caffeine, etc., all contribute; that's not the schools' fault.

I do kind of like the ideas of flex schedules, but what about the teachers? They're overworked as is -- I'm doubting there's enough teacher support to have a flex schedule for students. (And hell, I can't even get a flex schedule, and I'm a professional.)

7 a.m. is awful early, though. (But I did it, and despite being 30 years old now, 8 a.m. is too damn early.)
